“Frunk” isn’t the most glamorous word, but when it comes to electric vehicles, having a frunk is pretty useful. There’s some controversy over who actually coined the term “frunk”—some say TeslaCar and Driver say they first used it in 2012. But if you haven’t heard the portmanteau used in casual conversation, let’s start with the basics: a frunk is a “front trunk.” In other words, the space at the front of an electric vehicle is open without the need for a bulky engine. Although EVs have an engine, their electric motors are significantly smaller than a gas engine.

The design and layout resemble a skateboard-like platform. More specifically, the electric motor is located between the front or rear wheels; the batteries are then laid flat between the two axles under the cabin. This layout has some benefits. The center of gravity is lowered, which improves the vehicle’s mobility. It also maximizes interior spaces.

Frunks range in size and shape—some are significantly smaller; others are pretty expansive. Some EVs don’t have a frunk, but that’s a topic for another day. With the vast increase in available EV options, it’s no surprise that frunk sizes are diverse and varied. Let’s take a look at the ten electric vehicles with the coolest frunks.
